Rings of power in J.R.R. Tolkiens narrative share one quality in particular: They are a danger for their bearers. They inherit a destructive force, that is able to erase the identity of the one in possession of these things of power. This article wants to demonstrate, that this threat is not a special feature concerning the ringbearers in Tolkiens narrative. The destructive force of rings of power is not limited by medial or genre conventions, because not only the protagonist in 'Shadow of War' – Talion – and Hartmanns von Aue Iwein in his correspondent middle high german verse romance succumb to this force, but also the recipient is threatened by it.
